Instrument-assisted soft tissue care

Graston Technique

A focused approach to muscles and connective tissue, considered after an examination of the area that is bothering you.

A clinician discussing soft tissue instruments with a patient.

What to know

Graston uses shaped metal instruments during hands-on soft tissue treatment. The clinician moves an instrument over a selected area and adjusts the pressure to your response. This is one possible part of a care plan, alongside movement guidance or other appropriate therapies.

Before you decide

Before treatment, discuss previous surgery, sensitive skin, easy bruising and medicines that affect bleeding. Ask what sensations to expect and tell the clinician if the pressure feels too strong. A treatment should be reconsidered when symptoms change; discomfort is not a measure of success.
