Understanding your symptoms

Headaches

Frequent headaches deserve a careful conversation about their pattern, accompanying symptoms and possible triggers.

Different patterns need different decisions

A headache is not always related to the neck or spine. Migraine, tension-type headaches and other conditions can have different patterns and need different care. Describe where the pain occurs, how it feels and how often it appears. Mention nausea, sensitivity to light, visual changes or symptoms that occur before the head pain begins.

Bring a simple record

A brief diary can make an appointment more useful. Record when a headache started, how long it lasted, relevant activities and any medicine you took. Include the number of days you use headache medicine, even if you buy it without a prescription. You do not need to decide which details matter before bringing them to the clinician.

Ask what the evaluation suggests

A clinician can assess whether a musculoskeletal concern may be contributing or whether another medical evaluation is appropriate. Chiropractic care is not a universal treatment for headaches. The office’s role should be explained in relation to your symptoms and history. Ask about the reason for each recommendation and the point at which further assessment would be needed.

Keep broader health in view

Sleep, meals, hydration and daily routines are useful topics to discuss, without assuming that one habit explains every headache. Tell your clinician when a headache has changed from your usual pattern or begins after an injury. If you already have a headache diagnosis, bring your current care plan so the discussion accounts for existing treatment and relevant medical advice.

Questions to take with you

Ask whether your headache pattern calls for evaluation by your primary care clinician or another specialist. Discuss how to share any existing headache plan with the team and what new symptoms should change that plan. Bring questions about medicines to the clinician who manages them; do not stop or change a prescribed treatment based on this guide.

Call before your visit to discuss insurance or self-pay arrangements and current availability.

When to seek urgent help

A sudden, extremely severe headache, or one with confusion, weakness, a high fever and stiff neck, or after a significant head injury, requires emergency care.

Before your visit

Questions, answered.

Can this page tell me what is causing my symptoms?

No. Similar symptoms can have different explanations. A clinician needs your history and examination findings to advise on the next step.

What should I bring to an evaluation?

Bring a medication list, relevant reports you already have and a short account of how symptoms affect your day. Mention earlier treatment and any changes since it began.

Can I discuss treatment options before deciding?

Yes. Use the visit to ask about the findings, possible approaches, risks and alternatives. Ask how a proposed plan will be reviewed.
